The Fascinating History of “Turtle Island”

It’s incredible to think about the journey Koh Tao has taken to become the tourist destination it is today. Its name literally means “Turtle Island” in Thai, a name it earned both from the large population of sea turtles that once nested there and its turtle-like shape when viewed from a distance. But did you know that its past is not all about natural beauty? For a brief period from 1943 to 1944, Koh Tao was actually used as a political prison. The island’s remote location and rugged landscape made it an ideal, if isolated, place to house prisoners. You can read more about this surprising piece of history on sites like lbdivingkohtao.com. After the prison closed, the island was uninhabited until the late 1940s when two pioneering brothers from the mainland became the first permanent settlers. It was their hard work that laid the foundation for the community that exists today.

A World-Class Destination for Divers and Conservationists 🐠

You can’t talk about Koh Tao without mentioning diving! The island is famous worldwide for its incredibly diverse and accessible marine life. The clear, warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand are home to a stunning variety of species, from tiny colorful fish to much larger visitors. Divers and snorkelers can spot magnificent creatures like blacktip reef sharks, various species of rays, and even the gentle giants of the sea—whale sharks—who are frequent visitors to the area.

This popularity comes with a responsibility to protect the environment. That’s why Koh Tao is also a hub for marine conservation. There are many local groups, like Eco Koh Tao and the New Heaven Reef Conservation Program, that are actively working to preserve the coral reefs and marine ecosystems. They run projects like coral nurseries, which grow new coral to transplant onto damaged reefs, and they build artificial reefs to create new habitats and reduce pressure on the natural ones. It’s a wonderful example of how tourism and conservation can work together.

    Did You Know That? 🤔

    • King’s Mark: The island holds a special place in Thai history. In 1899, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) visited Koh Tao during a royal tour and left his royal monogram, his initials, carved into a large rock at Jor Por Ror Bay. You can still visit this historical marker today.
    • The Island’s Shape: The name “Turtle Island” isn’t just because of the turtles. From certain viewpoints, the island’s rocky outline literally looks like a turtle swimming on the surface of the water!
    • The “Diving Capital” of Southeast Asia: Koh Tao issues more PADI scuba diving certifications than almost any other location in the world, making it a true diving capital. Its calm waters and numerous shallow dive sites are perfect for beginners to learn the ropes.

Thanks again for this wonderful post. It’s a great reminder that when we travel, we can not only explore beautiful places but also learn about their history and support the local efforts to protect them. Keep on adventuring! 🗺️
