A Rainforest Older Than the Amazon
Khao Sok isn’t just another park; it’s home to one of the world’s oldest evergreen rainforests, dating back over 160 million years! Its ancient age means it has an incredibly rich biodiversity. The area’s unique geography, with its dramatic limestone karst mountains, was shaped by millions of years of tectonic shifts and erosion. The most famous part of the park, Cheow Lan Lake, was actually created artificially in 1982 when the Ratchaprapha Dam was built to provide electricity and irrigation. The dam flooded a valley and submerged a village, creating a series of dramatic limestone islands that now poke out of the water like something out of a fairy tale. The Guilin of Thailand
Cheow Lan Lake is often called the “Guilin of Thailand” because its beautiful, misty landscapes resemble those of Guilin in China. Staying in one of the floating bungalows on the lake is an unforgettable experience. You can wake up to the sounds of the jungle, go kayaking right from your doorstep, and watch the mist rise off the water in the morning. The park is a haven for wildlife; you can spot wild elephants, tapirs, gibbons, and many different species of monkeys and birds. It’s a great place for a river safari, where you can peacefully float down the river and spot animals on the banks.
