The Golden Age of Thai Civilization
Sukhothai is often called the “Dawn of Happiness,” which is what its name means in Thai. This city was the first capital of the Kingdom of Siam and a key period in Thai history. The Sukhothai Kingdom, which existed from the 13th to the 15th centuries, is credited with creating many things that are now considered uniquely Thai. For example, it’s believed that the Thai alphabet was invented here by King Ramkhamhaeng the Great in 1292. (Source: Sukhothai Kingdom – Wikipedia). The art and architecture of this period are also famous for their unique style, especially the graceful, walking Buddha statues that are found throughout the historical park. These figures are so beautiful and show a sense of movement and grace that is different from other Buddha images.
A UNESCO World Heritage Treasure
The Sukhothai Historical Park is so well preserved that UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 1991. The park is huge, covering about 70 square kilometers, and it contains the ruins of nearly 200 temples and monuments. What’s really cool is that the park is very flat, which makes it perfect for exploring by bicycle. You can rent a bike for a very small fee and spend a whole day just cycling around from one temple to another, feeling like you’ve gone back in time. The most important temple, Wat Mahathat, is in the center of the old city and is absolutely stunning with its many chedis and Buddha images.
The Original Loy Krathong
Did you know that Sukhothai is believed to be the birthplace of the famous Loy Krathong festival? This “Festival of Lights” is celebrated all over Thailand on the full moon of the 12th lunar month, usually in November. The tradition of floating a
krathong—a small, decorated raft made of banana leaves—on a river or pond is said to have started here in Sukhothai during the time of King Ramkhamhaeng. The festival in Sukhothai Historical Park is especially magical, with a spectacular light and sound show, fireworks, and thousands of candles flickering on the water. It’s a truly unforgettable experience and a powerful connection to the past.
