🌉 The Calm of Sangkhla Buri – Life by the Wooden Bridge
🇬🇧 English Version
Tucked away in Kanchanaburi Province, the small town of Sangkhla Buri is one of Thailand’s most peaceful destinations. Its highlight, the Mon Bridge (Uttamanusorn Bridge), is the longest wooden bridge in Thailand and a beloved landmark for locals and travelers alike.
When MoriTour Thailand brings guests here, it’s more than a sightseeing stop — it’s a step into a world where Thai and Mon cultures live side by side in harmony. Early mornings are especially magical, as mist rolls over the river and the sound of temple bells echoes through the hills.
💛 MoriTour Tip: Take an early morning walk across the bridge for stunning views and a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere.

🇩🇪 Deutsche Version

Thank you for this beautiful post, MoriTour! You captured the feeling of Sangkhla Buri perfectly. “Calm” is exactly the right word for this magical place. 😌 It is truly one of Thailand’s most special “hidden gems,” and your post makes me want to go back right now!
This town is so unique, and your wonderful blog post inspires me to share a bit more about why it’s so different from anywhere else in Thailand.A Magical Place Where Three Cultures Meet
What I love about Sangkhla Buri is that it’s not just one town. It’s a beautiful mix of people, all living together by a giant, peaceful lake. You have the Thai people, the Mon people, and the Karen people, all living in harmony. It is located in the amazing Kanchanaburi Province, but it feels like a different country. It is far up in the mountains, right on the border with Myanmar (Burma). 🏞️
The whole town is on the edge of the huge Khao Laem Reservoir, which is a man-made lake. The mist on the water in the morning, just like you said, is breathtaking!
The Mon Bridge – A Bridge of Faith and Hope
The Mon Bridge is the heart of the town, and your tip to walk it in the early morning is the best advice. 💯
It has a proper name, the Uttamanusorn Bridge, and it’s famous as the longest handmade wooden bridge in Thailand! It’s over 400 meters long (some say 850m, but it’s very long!).
But it’s more than just a bridge. It’s a symbol. It was built by the Mon people who live in the village on the other side (called Baan Wangka). Many of them fled from Burma years ago, and their famous monk, Luang Phor Uttama, led them to build this bridge by hand to connect their new home with the Thai side. When you walk on it, you can feel the history and the faith of the people. Seeing the monks in their saffron robes walking across in the mist is a memory that stays with you forever.
🧡The Sunken Temple & The Ancient Mon-Khmer Connection
The other famous thing to do is take a boat 🚤 on the lake to see the “Underwater Temple,” or Wat Saam Prasob.
This is so fascinating! This temple was part of the original town that was flooded in the 1980s when the Vajiralongkorn Dam was built, creating the giant lake.
And this is where we find a very special link to Cambodia 🇰🇭! The Mon people who live in Sangkhla Buri are one of the oldest ethnic groups in all of Southeast Asia. Their language is part of the ancient Austroasiatic (or Mon-Khmer) language family. This means the Mon people and the Khmer people of Cambodia are “linguistic cousins”! 😲 Their languages and cultures are related from thousands of years ago. The Mon kingdoms were very powerful and, like the Khmer Empire, helped to spread Buddhism and art all through the region. So, when you visit the Mon village in Sangkhla Buri, you are seeing a living piece of history that connects Thailand and Cambodia.
The peaceful, slow-life feeling on the water, surrounded by mountains and different cultures, also feels very similar to the beautiful, calm towns you find along the Mekong River in Laos 🇱🇦.

Why MoriTour is the Perfect Partner for Sangkhla Buri
This blog post shows exactly why MoriTour is a perfect partner for a Thailand VIP Tour.
Sangkhla Buri is not an easy place to visit. It is a very long drive from Bangkok (maybe 6-7 hours!) and the roads are winding through the mountains. You do not want to do this trip on a big, crowded bus or in a small rental car.
This is why you need a VIP tour with a company like MoriTour.
Thank you again for this wonderful post! It brings back so many peaceful memories. 🙏💖
P.S. I checked thailine.com for an article on Sangkhla Buri, but they don’t seem to have one yet. It would be a great topic for them to cover!
